Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has confirmed that ‘Politics and Society’ is to become available as a subject option for the
Leaving Certificate. A date has not yet been finalised for it’s introduction but the Minister has informed the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) that he wants it to proceed.
The new subject will build on student learning at junior cycle level through Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE) and has been under discussion since 2006 with a syllabus being prepared in 2011. A copy of the Consultation Document and the draft syllabus
are available here.
According to the NCCA website, “Politics and Society aims to develop the student's ability to be a reflective and active citizen, in a way that is informed by the insights and skills of social and political sciences.
