A new deal should go some way to restoring the pay losses suffered by new
teachers in Ireland.
Those who entered the profession after September 2011 are to go up by one point on the pay scale, which should cushion the blow of taking up their roles on lower salaries and losing their supervision and substitution pay, the Irish Independent reports.
This loss is equivalent to around 1,500 euros a year - similar to the amount their wage will increase by thanks to the climb up the pay scale.
As part of the new deal, additional job security is being offered through the provision for a panel system for fixed-term teachers at second level.
This setup is already in place at primary level and it is anticipated that such a move will provide more certainty with regard to career progression, with teachers being more likely to be handed permanent roles when they come up.
