Gay and lesbian teachers in Ireland could be set to enjoy greater job protection thanks to proposed new legislation.

The newly-published Bill is aimed at safeguarding teachers against dismissal based on the idea that their life choices might undermine the religious ethos of their working practices, the Irish Independent reports.

Backed by a number of Labour TDs and senators, the law would offer more job security for gay and lesbian teachers who fear their sexuality might lead to them losing their post.

Dublin North Central TD Aodhan O Riordain said he feels particularly passionate about the issue due to his former role as a teacher and principal.

Mr O Riordain noted that in the past he has worked with colleagues "who could have lost their jobs simply for being gay or not being married ... These people were my friends and some of the best teachers I ever knew".

In addition to teachers, the proposed legislation would provide more protection for divorced workers and those who have children out of wedlock.
